How often should I fertilize my peace lily?

Peace lilies benefit from regular fertilization, but it’s important not to overdo it. Here are some guidelines for fertilizing your peace lily:

  1. Frequency: Fertilize your peace lily approximately every two months during the growing season, which is typically spring and summer. This allows the plant to receive the necessary nutrients for healthy growth.
  2. Type of Fertilizer: Use a balanced, water-soluble houseplant fertilizer. Look for a fertilizer with an equal ratio of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), such as a 20-20-20 or 10-10-10 formulation. This balanced ratio provides a well-rounded nutrient supply for the peace lily.
  3. Dilution and Application: Follow the instructions on the fertilizer packaging for dilution ratios. Generally, it’s recommended to dilute the fertilizer to half or quarter strength. Apply the diluted fertilizer to the soil around the plant, being careful not to get it on the leaves. Water the plant after fertilizing to help distribute the nutrients.
  4. Avoid Excessive Fertilization: Over-fertilizing can lead to salt buildup in the soil, causing root damage. If you notice brown tips on the leaves or the plant seems unhealthy despite regular fertilization, it may be a sign of excessive fertilizer or improper dilution. In such cases, flush the soil with plain water to remove excess salts.

Always consider the specific instructions and recommendations provided with your chosen fertilizer. Additionally, remember to adjust the fertilization schedule if your peace lily is growing in lower light conditions or if it’s going through a dormant period during winter, as its nutrient requirements may be different.
